“High school life, oh my high school life, walang kasing saya…” so goes a song about high school graduation. Don’t you worry, graduating from high school does not mean end of the world. If you are going to college, be thankful that despite poverty, unemployment and uncertainties in our country, your parents are still able to send you to school. You might be off to a college or university in a not-so-nearby town, or perhaps you are going to a place far from your home like Baguio, Manila or Cebu and part of you is afraid…

College life is an altogether different and deeper adventure. If you are graduating from high school this March or a junior who feels so excited to be 4th year soon, these principles will help you. And if you are already a college student, it’s not hurting to be reminded of these pointers.

Before packing up your clothes and trooping to your would-be college, ask yourself the following questions to determine your direction. This is somehow related to the Ignite Yourself series here at MightyRasing.com. Do check this series for more.

Who am I? This involves your personality, character, upbringing and temperament.
What can I do? Prepare a list of your skills, talents and favorite subjects. Do your skills and talents coincide with your course?
Where do I want to go? Write down your vision, the direction you want to take as well as your goals and objectives in life.
Where am I? Take a stock of your current situation: your economic, position and even your limitations. This will be the starting point of your journey to college.
What do I need to achieve my visions? List down the resources, the skills, talents and idea you will need for the journey. This is somewhat related to question number 2.

Pointers for making it through college

Always keep your VISIONS in mind. This will keep you focused and dedicated to finishing college.

ATTEND your classes. You are paying for your professors and for the use of your school facilities. You’re cheating yourself if you skip your classes. Besides, you will miss out important lessons if you are absent.

READ a lot – not only subjects related to your field of study but about current events and other subject areas. It pays to be informed. So go to the library, not to sleep and chat but to read!

MANAGE YOUR TIME. Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us that there’s a time for everything. So as for college, there’s a time for attending classes, for reading, eating, playing and for resting. Neglecting your tasks will only get you a pile of to-do items and you will be hard-pressed just to catch up.

BE EXCELLENT IN COMPLETING REQUIREMENTS. Whether it is a research paper or a Math assignment, recitation, exam or whatever, pour out your best and always submit them on time.

HAVE FUN. Dedicate yourself to learning but you also need to play and unwind from time to time. Otherwise, you will go crazy with the pressures of academics.

AVOID TEMPTATIONS. Because of your level of freedom, you are more exposed to temptations like frequent gimmicks, drugs, alcohol, sex — all these and more! If you do not hold on to your vision and give in to temptations, you might bring home frustrations instead of diploma.

MAKE ROOM FOR GOD. No matter how busy you are, always draw near to Him. He is the source of wisdom, intelligence and those who trust in him renew their strength.

College is not a one big party that you attend; rather it is a journey and an adventure to take and will prepare you to live productively and happily if you finish it. God bless!
